Epanko to Supply Tanzanian Graphite to Japan



Australian graphite developer Kibaran Resources (ASX:KNL) has recently signed an agreement with Japanese trading giant Sojitz for the supply of graphite from its Epanko project in Tanzania. According to the exclusive agreement, Kibaran will supply a minimum of 14,000t per year of natural flake graphite products from Tanzania to Sojitz over the next 5 years.

 Sojitz will distribute the graphite into Japan, Korea and Taiwan to the lithium battery industry. “The Sojitz agreement provides an avenue for long-term sales of Epanko graphite into the fast-growing lithium-ion battery markets of Japan and Korea,” Kibaran’s press release indicates.

 Kibaran Managing Director Andrew Spinks said the company’s relationship with Sojitz would also provide a platform to increase production capacity at Epanko as market demand increases for battery grade graphite. He added: “Graphite demand is forecast to treble on the back of the lithium battery demand and Kibaran’s relationship with Sojitz and the ability to expand Epanko’s capacity means it will be ideally positioned to capitalise on this opportunity.” 

Tanzania Graphite Production 

Tanzania’s largest graphite deposits are located in the central and east southern regions of the country. 
At the end of 2015, The Tanzanian Ministry of Energy and Minerals (MEM) announced that Tanzania will soon become one of the largest producers of graphite in the world, due to recent and abundant discoveries of graphite fields across the country.

 In 2014, China was the largest producer of graphite with 780,000t, followed by India (170,000t), Brazil (80,000t), Canada, North Korea and Turkey with 30,000t, Russia (14,000t), Mexico (8,000t), Ukraine and Zimbabwe with 6,000t, Madagascar (5,000t), Sri Lanka (4,000t), Norway (2,000t) and other countries (1,000t). Graphite discoveries in Tanzania come mainly from Magnis Resources Limited (ASX:MNS), Mozambi Resources (ASX:MOZ) and Kibaran Resources Limited (ASX:KNL). 
Kibaran’s primary focus is on the Epanko graphite project in south-east Tanzania which will be capable of producing 44,000t a year of flake graphite concentrate. Kibaran already has binding agreements for 30,000t of graphite per year including 20,000t with German company ThyssenKrupp and 10,000t with European graphite trader. “Kibaran is now studying the potential to increase Epanko’s production capacity based on forecast growth in lithium battery demand,” Spinks said.

SERENGETI BOYS YAZIDI KULETA MATUMAINI YA KUELEKEA MADAGASCAR




Timu ya taifa ya vijana chini miaka 17 ‘Serengeti Boys’ imepata ushindi wa magoli 2-0 dhidi ya timu ya vijana ya Afrika Kusuni katika mchezo wa marudiano uliochezwa kwenye uwanja wa Azam Complex kuwania kufuzu fainali za matifa ya Afrika kwa vijana wa umri huo mashindano yanayotarajiwa kufanyika Madagascar.
Magoli ya Serengeti Boys yamefungwa na kipindi Mohamed Abdala aliyefunga dakika ya 34 kipindi cha kwanza wakati bao la pili likifungwa dakika za lala salama na Muhsin Makame.
Serengeti Boys imeitupa nje timu ya taifa ya Afrika Kusini kwa jumla ya magoli 3-1 hiyo ni baada ya timu hizo kutoka sare ya kufungana 1-1 kwenye mchezo wa awali uliopigwa Afrika Kusini.

Matokeo hayo yanaifanya Serengeti Boys isonge mbele, itakutana na Namibia au Congo Brazzaville katika raundi inayofuata na endapo itafanikiwa kufuzu basi itakata tiketi ya kushiki katika fainali za mataifa ya Afrika.

Volvo and Uber team up to develop self-driving cars




Volvo Car Group has agreed a $300 million alliance with Uber to develop self-driving cars, the latest move by traditional vehicle manufacturers to team up with Silicon Valley firms seen as threats to their industry.
The partnership will allow the Swedish-based carmaker, owned by China's Geely, and ride-hailing service Uber to pool resources into initially developing the autonomous driving capabilities of its flagship XC90 SUV model. The investment will be shared roughly equally by the two companies.
Carpooling firms have formed alliances with large automakers to accelerate efforts to launch an autonomous car, a technology which depends on vehicle software and hardware working together to give a vehicle the right reflexes in traffic.
Companies such as Uber would make drastic savings on their biggest cost -- paying drivers -- if they were able to incorporate self-driving cars into their fleet.
For the carmakers themselves, the ability of consumers to hail a cab via a simple app or hire a car by the hour risks putting them off buying their own vehicle.
Toyota Motor Co (7203.T) has said it is investing an undisclosed sum in Uber, while German rival Volkswagen (VOWG_p.DE) has said it will back Gett, a ride-hailing company. General Motors (GM.N) has already acquired a stake in Uber's rival, Lyft.
In the latest alliance, Uber will purchase Volvos and then install its own driverless control system for the specific needs of its ride-hailing service.
Volvo will use the same vehicle for its own autonomous driving project, which is based on a plan that still envisages having a driver in the car.

SAFETY FOCUS
The investment will go towards researching and developing both hardware, such as sensors used to detect traffic and obstacles, as well as software for the self driving cars.
"Autonomous driving is key. For this you need software to develop and be safe," Volvo Chief Executive Hakan Samuelsson told Reuters.

The deal does not stop either Volvo or Uber from striking alliances with others. Staff too will largely be kept within their own companies rather than shared.

Volvo, bought by Geely from Ford (F.N) in 2010, has long enjoyed a reputation for its solid and reliable designs.
"Volvo is a leader in vehicle development and best-in-class when it comes to safety," Travis Kalanick, Uber's chief executive, said in a statement.
One of Sweden's biggest companies by sales, Volvo is banking on a 75 billion Swedish crowns ($9 billion) investment plan in new models and plants to secure a foothold in a premium market where it had struggled to make inroads under Ford's tutelage.
Volvo aims to launch an experiment involving self-driving cars in China, Britain and Sweden.

The self-driving cars that Volvo is envisioning will be like normal cars that alert the driver when autopilot mode can be activated, on freeways or in specific zones such as gated neighbourhoods or industrial parks, giving the driver the option to maintain or relinquish control.

Mkuu wa Wilaya ya Kinondoni Mh. Ally Hapi amewapiga marufuku mgambo wa wilaya hiyo kuwafanyia fujo wafanyabiashara wadogo wanaofanya shughuli zao katika maeneo rasmi.
Hapi aliyasema hayo jana katika kipindi cha Mada Moto kinachorushwa moja kwa moja na kituo cha Channel Ten.
Alisema kumekuwepo na tabia ya baadhi ya watu kuwatoza ushuru kinyume cha sheria wafanyabiashara hao wanaofahamika kwa jina la wamachinga jambo linalosababisha halmashauri ya manispaa ya kinondoni kupoteza mapato.

Lindi set to be Tanzania Economic Hub Thanks to Gas Plant, Minister Indicates



The Lindi region is set to be Tanzania’s economic hub thanks to the planned construction of a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant. This was recently announced by Prof. Sospeter Muhongo, Tanzania’s Minister of Energy and Minerals. He further explained that the Government of Tanzania will invest USD30b in the construction of the plant, which will take up to 40 months. The plant will be located in the southern town of Lindi close to the deep-sea offshore blocks where most of Tanzania’s gas discoveries have been made. For this, the Government will have to build gas pipes from the sea to the plant with length of 100–200km, Muhongo said. 

The plant will be constructed by international oil and gas companies Statoil, BG Group, ExxonMobil and Ophir Energy in partnership with the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC). In the beginning of 2016, the Government of Tanzania acquired approximately 2,070 hectares land at the cost of USD6m in Lindi town for the construction of the LNG plant. In addition, an area of 17,000 hectares next to the terminal destined area has been secured for the development of an industrial park. The LNG terminal is expected to start production in 2021 or 2022. According to the Bank of Tanzania (BoT), the project will add 2% to the country’s GDP thanks to the large investments that it will attract.
 Tanzania has the second largest natural gas reserves in East Africa with more than 55 trillion cubic feet (tcf) so far discovered and behind Mozambique with 100 tcf according to the Energy Information Administration (EIA).


TAZARA to Transport Fuel to DRC




The Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) will transport 18m liters (18,000t) of petroleum products to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in the next one year. 

This is the result from a recently signed Agreement between TAZARA and African Fossils Limited of Tanzania, according to TAZARA’s press release from July 17th 2016. The first consignment of about 1m liters (1,000t) has already departed the port of Dar es Salaam. TAZARA expects the initial 2m liters (2,000t) to be successfully delivered to the DRC within the next one month. “This import order is particularly key because it fulfills our desire to balance the flow of traffic in both directions of our line as most of the traffic we are currently moving comprises exports from Zambia and DRC”, the press release indicates. 
The fuel order is the second import consignment to be secured within a month, following the transportation order for 48m liters (48,000t) of petroleum for Malawi, secured in the end of June 2016. TAZARA Performance In 2015–2016, TAZARA transported 130,000t of cargo, compared to 87,680t in 2014–2015, representing an increase of 48%. TAZARA plans to improve its cargo traffic by 200% in 2016–2017, reaching 381,000t. This will account for 8% of TAZARA’s designed capacity of 5m t.


CAHF Release Tanzania 2015 Housing Price Data



The Center for Affordable Housing Finance (CAHF) in Africa recently presented new data about housing and construction in Tanzania and the rest of Africa. CAHF has been collecting data on house prices, construction costs, and income across Africa for the past 6 years. 

The data is being explored as it relates to affordability and access to housing in Africa. Tanzania House Prices and Sizes In 2011, the cheapest house built by a private developer in Tanzania was 65 square meters (m2) at the cost of USD16,130, or USD250 per m2. In 2015, the same house would cost USD20,992, or USD323 per m2, representing an increase of 30%. For comparison, in Tanzania’s neighboring country Rwanda, the cheapest house built by a private developer was 125m2 at the cost of USD34,247, or USD274 per m2. Tanzania Housing Rental Costs The average housing rental price in Tanzania is USD616, compared to USD797 in Rwanda.

 The rental price of a low-income single-room housing in the urban areas of Tanzania is USD26, USD188 for middle-income 2–3 bedrooms housing and USD2,250 for high-income 3–4 bedrooms housing. Tanzania Housing Purchase Costs The average housing purchase price in Tanzania is USD422,500. For a middle-income 2–3 bedroom house, Tanzanians would pay USD90,000. A high-income 3–4 bedroom house in the urban areas of Tanzania would cost USD1.6m. Tanzania Cost of Cement In 2011, the cost of a 50kg bag of cement in Tanzania was USD9. In 2015, the price fell to USD7. Accordingly, it would cost 12.4% of the average urban annual income in Tanzania to afford the cement needed to build a 40 square meter house. In Rwanda, the price of a 50kg bag of cement was USD15 in 2011 and fell to USD13 in 2015. Accordingly, it would cost 21.9% of the average urban annual income in Rwanda to afford the cement needed to build a 40 square meter house.

Single Passport -Turning Point for a More Prosperous Africa





To all those who are convinced that regional integration requires strong political will and committed leadership, African Heads of State showed just that when they were presented with a single African passport at the 27th African Union Summit in Kigali, Rwanda. The proposal to implement a single passport for Africa and ensure free movement of people is part of the African Union's 2063 Agenda.

While skeptics may continue to doubt, the African Development Bank shall remain focused on delivering on our plan to transform Africa and work towards building a continent with seamless borders. We have reasons to be optimistic with the strong signal sent by Heads of State in Kigali.
Indeed, we are optimistic because, even if we are still at the very early stages of a complex process, holding a single African passport will mean that our leaders' aspirations to see their citizens travel throughout the continent without being confronted by the usual administrative constraints are attainable.
Meeting these aspirations is critical if we want to achieve our vision for an integrated economic space where opportunities are shared among the people of Africa. Labour mobility is highly beneficial, and can help fill Africa's labour needs in the education, health and industrial sectors. Rwanda has seen a 22% increase in African tourism and business travellers since 2013 when it allowed Africans to obtain visas on arrival. The East African region has made great progress in overcoming the challenges associated with free movement of labour by encouraging mutual recognition of professional and academic qualifications, starting with engineers, architects, and accountants.

The African Development Bank's Human Capital Strategy indicates that Africa needs about four million more teachers and one to two million more health workers. These shortages can partly be addressed by improving workers' mobility and opening borders to allow health personnel, including nurses, midwives and biomedical engineers to practice elsewhere on the continent.

The education sector can also profit from a borderless continent. In July 2013, the AfDB announced the creation of a US $154.2-million Pan African University of science, innovation and technology within the next five years. This initiative, coupled with a number of inter-university associations such as the francophone Conseil Africain et Malgache pour l'Enseignement Superieur (CAMES); Inter-University Council of East Africa (IUCEA); Southern African Regional Universities Association (SARUA); and inter-university cooperation under the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), should be strengthened and encouraged to facilitate cross-border inter-university mobility for students and lecturers. Ultimately, this should also address the technical skills deficit that is prevalent on the continent.
Just recently, on July 14, 2016, the Bank's Board approved an Industrialisation Strategy, whose key objective is to encourage development of regional value chains and high value-added activities and products for Africa's commodities and exports. The diamond industry is an example, as the Southern African Development Region (SADC) produces an estimated 60% of the world's rough gem diamond. But to date, of the estimated 800,000 jobs in the cutting and polishing industry worldwide, only 8,000 are in the SADC region, representing less than 1% of the global workforce. This indeed is a lost opportunity for the 200 million youths in Africa, comprising over 20 percent of the continent's population, and who make up about 60 percent of total unemployment in Africa. The question we should ask ourselves is what skills, labour policies and training facilities are needed at regional level to enable SADC to bring the estimated 800,000 diamond cutters jobs back to the region?

The efforts that the AfDB has made on the infrastructure front are commendable, with US $3.4 billion having been approved for Multinational Operations in 2015 alone. While we all agree and understand that regional economic integration goes beyond building "hard" infrastructure, it is also fundamental that we work on the "software" which includes easing the movement of skills to make our continent a destination of choice for investors.
The Bank is supporting a number of key initiatives that seek to harmonise regulations and policies with a view to facilitating labour mobility, an important enabler for regional integration and economic development on the continent. One such initiative is the drafting of a new migration policy for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which is expected to enhance talent mobility in the region.

In view of all of these, I am hopeful that together, united in our diversity, we Africans can paint a picture of what we desire for ourselves and for future generations. The single African passport is yet another milestone, and we should not shy away from a little celebration. As Nelson Mandela once said, "Remember to celebrate milestones as you prepare for the road ahead."

Furthering the Sustainable Growth of Aviation in Africa


Air Transport Action Group (ATAG) issued Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders last month that focuses on the myriad of benefits that aviation brings to the world today and well into the future. GE Aviation spoke with Michael Gill, ATAG Executive Director about the report's findings and how aviation can continue its sustainable growth.

Why did ATAG release this report?
Michael Gill: Aviation really is a unique industry. We are the only mode of transport that can move people and goods to almost anywhere else in the world within a day. Without air transport, today's global economy would look very different. The purpose of Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders is to show the impact that global air transport has on the modern world. Air travel has become so widespread that people can sometimes take for granted just how important it is. As well as being a major employer and driver of economic growth, aviation also generates significant social benefits, which are explored in the report.

However, air transport also comes with an environmental cost. What we argue in this report is the need for balance. We need to address the issue of aircraft CO2 emissions, while retaining the undoubted and numerous benefits of air travel. And this is exactly what the whole industry is striving to achieve.

The report details very interesting facts about aviation's impact on global economic growth and forecasts aviation-supported jobs worldwide will increase to more than 99 million and Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to $5.9 million in the next 20 years. But it states that to achieve these benefits will require appropriate support from governments. What type of support is needed?
Michael Gill: ATAG's members, which represent all sectors of the aviation industry (airlines, airports, manufacturers and air traffic management), all agree that support from governments and intergovernmental institutions is vital if the industry is to grow, particularly in a sustainable manner. In 2015, all sectors of the industry joined together to deliver an open letter to representatives of all the world's governments. The letter focused on five main requests:
  • Investment in and reform of the air traffic management systems;
  • Continued support for research into new technology, operational measures and sustainable alternative fuels;
  • Improvements in intermodal transport planning;
  • Institution of the right policy framework to help accelerate the availability of sustainable alternative fuels; and
  • Agreement on a global market-based measure for aviation emissions at the 2016 ICAO Assembly.
These requests all have an environmental focus and would allow the sector to continue to grow in a sustainable manner, but there are other measures governments can take to maximize the economic contribution of the air transport sector. Easing or removing restrictive tax regimes and signing international open skies agreements are steps that governments could easily take to support the industry and reap its many benefits.
How is the report being used by governments?
Michael Gill: The previous reports have been sent to governments and other regional institutions such as the African Union, and we are always happy to see facts and figures included in speeches and reports. But more importantly, when the full range of benefits are gathered together and put on paper, we hope that governments will take stock and consider just how important the aviation industry is and appreciate the need to support its role in the modern world.
Sustainable development is also a key theme in the report. What does this mean for the aviation industry, and how is the industry supporting this set of 17 goals, which were announced by the United Nations as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?

Michael Gill: When we sat down to plan this report and decided on using the Sustainable Development Goals as a theme, we were struck by how aviation plays at least some part in supporting 14 of the 17 goals. Goals such as 'decent work and economic growth' and 'industry, innovation and infrastructure' are clearly supported by aviation, but other less obvious goals such as 'good health and well-being' or 'quality education' can also be aided by aviation. We want to take this quick analysis for the Aviation: Benefits Beyond Borders report even further and are exploring ways that we can have a more comprehensive look at the way air transport can support the goals.

What are the key challenges for the aviation industry now and in the future?
Michael Gill: The main challenge for aviation now and in the coming decades is without a doubt sustainable development, but it is a challenge that the whole industry is committed to meeting. We are keenly awaiting the outcome of this year's ICAO Assembly, where we hope an agreement on a global offsetting scheme for aviation emissions will be made, allowing us to meet our goal of carbon-neutral growth from 2020. However, this is only meant to be a temporary measure.

We, as an industry, have the long-term ambition to halve aviation's net CO2 emissions by 2050, based on 2005 levels. With billions of dollars being put into technological research and the commercialization of sustainable alternative fuels, we are confident this goal can be achieved. As ever, the support of governments is needed to help us in this endeavor.


Aviation is a unique industry where partnership across all parts of the sector play such an important role day-to-day. We have already seen how powerful that collaboration can be when deployed on long-term issues such as climate change. Now we should look at how the industry can join together on other sustainable development topics (not limited to environment, either. See the full list of UN SDGs). So I'd put the call out to all our industry colleagues: what challenges do YOU think we need to focus on next as a sector? What else can we do to help ensure sustainable aviation into the future? Bermuda Triangle: Ship Reappears 90 Years After Going Missing




The Cuban Coast Guard announced this morning, that they had intercepted an unmanned ship heading for the island, which is presumed to be the SS Cotopaxi, a tramp steamer which vanished in December 1925 and has since been connected to the legend of the Bermuda Triangle.
The Cuban authorities spotted the ship for the first time on May 16, near a restricted military zone, west of Havana. They made many unsuccessful attempts to communicate with the crew, and finally mobilized three patrol boats to intercept it.
When they reached it, they were surprised to find that the ship was actually a nearly 100-year old steamer identified as the Cotopaxi, a name famously associated with the legend of the Bermuda Triangle. There was no one on board and the ship seemed to have been abandoned for decades, suggesting that this could actually be the tramp freighter that disappeared in 1925.

An exhaustive search of the ship led to the discovery of the captain’s logbook. It was, indeed, associated with the Clinchfield Navigation Company, the owners of the SS Cotopaxi, but hasn’t brought any clue concerning what happened to the ship over the last 90 years.

Cuban expert, Rodolfo Salvador Cruz, believes that the captain’s logbook is authentic. This document is full of precious information concerning the life of the crew before the ship’s disappearance, but the entries stop suddenly on December 1, 1925.
On 29 November 1925, the SS Cotopaxi departed Charleston, South Carolina, and headed towards Havana, Cuba. The ship had a crew of 32 men, under the command of Captain W. J. Meyer, and was carrying a cargo of 2340 tons of coal. It was reported missing two days later, and was unheard of for almost 90 years.

The Vice President of Council of Ministers, General Abelardo Colomé, announced that the Cuban authorities were going to conduct a thorough investigation to elucidate the mystery of the ship’s disappearance and reappearance.
“It is very important for us to understand what happened”  says General Colomé. “Such incidents could be really bad for our economy, so  want to make sure that this kind of disappearance doesn’t happen again. The time has come to solve the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle, once and for all.”

Mwanamuziki maarufu wa nyimbo za 'hip hop' Bow Wow, ambaye jina lake halisi ni Shad Moss, ametangaza kuwa atastaafu kutoka kwenye fani ya muziki, akiwa na umri wa miaka 29, mwaka huu 2016.
Ametoa tangazo hilo kwenye mtandao wa Twitter.
Bow Wow alitoa albamu yake ya kwanza akiwa na umri wa miaka 13, mwaka 2000.

India Lend USD92m to Tanzania for Water Projects



India signed a line of credit of USD92m for the improvement of water supply in Zanzibar. The agreement was signed during the visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tanzania on July 10th 2016. He announced that India will consider additional financing of USD500m for other water projects across Tanzania. In 2015, the total bilateral trade turnover between India and Tanzania amounted to USD2.4b. India’s exports were worth USD1.3b, and Tanzania’s exports were worth USD1.2b. Tanzania’s exports to India constituted about 19% of the country’s global exports. Tanzania’s imports from India constituted about 9% of its global imports. Tanzania’s major imports from India include petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, motor vehicles, two/three-wheelers, wires and cables, sugar, electrical machinery/equipment, yarn, apparel & clothing, articles of iron & steel, etc. Tanzania’s major exports to India include gold, cashew nuts, pulses, timber, spices (mainly cloves), ores and metal scrap, gemstones, etc.


 India signed a line of credit of USD92m for the improvement of water supply in Zanzibar. The agreement was signed during the visit of the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Tanzania on July 10th 2016. He announced that India will consider additional financing of USD500m for other water projects across Tanzania. Tanzania to Undergo EUR2.5m Study for Hydropower Generation and Irrigation



Tanzania is expected to benefit from a boost in hydropower generation and irrigation development thanks to a new study financed by the African Water Facility (AWF). The funding will help the Government of Tanzania launch the pre-feasibility study of the Kikonge multipurpose dam, irrigation and hydropower project in Southwestern Tanzania. The total cost of the pre-feasibility study is estimated at EUR2.5m. The AWF will fund the project with EUR2m. The remaining EUR0.5m will be provided by the Climate Resilient Infrastructure Development Facility (CRIDF) and the Tanzanian Government. The study will cover the irrigation scheme, agro-business development, the dam and its reservoir and the associated hydropower plant and the high voltage transmission line. In addition, this study will also encompass water supply to local communities, local electricity supply through a mini hydro-power plant, fishing activities, tourism development and other uses of water for activities in the reservoir area (navigation, transport and water for mining). Tanzania Kikonge Multipurpose Dam When completed, the 300MW multipurpose dam will result in a 53% increase of Tanzania’s hydropower capacity. Hydropower installed capacity in Tanzania stands at 562MW, while estimates of potential additional capacity are as high as 4GW, according to the African Development Bank (AfDB). With an annual hydropower generation of 1,300 GWh by 2025, the dam will address Tanzania’s long-standing shortage of power supply, AWF indicates. The 6b m3 storage reservoir capacity of the dam will allow a stable supply of energy throughout the year. The dam will also improve availability of water resources for irrigation and associated activities in the area. This will boost agricultural productivity and provide additional revenues to local farmers and populations, according to the AWF. “In this southwestern region of Tanzania, close to the shores of the Lake Nyasa, crop production is currently dominated by rain-fed systems leaving the irrigation potential marginally tapped. While agriculture is the basis of Tanzanian economy (27% of the national GDP), its development is hampered by its dependence on unreliable and irregular weather conditions. Irrigation has therefore been identified as a key priority for Tanzania, which has huge potential for irrigated agriculture with its numerous rivers, lakes and underground water resources,” the AWF press release indicates. The estimated overall duration of the project is 22 months, including 15 months for the performance of the studies.
