This Is Why Instagram Finally Brought Back The #Curvy Hashtag
It’s been just over a week since Instagram banned the search term #curvy because, according to a spokesperson,
“it was being used to share images and videos that violated Instagram’s
community guidelines around nudity.” As of yesterday afternoon, though,
it was officially brought back, y’al
The controversial hashtag blocking caused internet outrage
as women felt it was unfair to keep terms like #thin, #skinny, #fat,
#obese, and even #fatf*ck, yet using #curvy to describe their body type
was suddenly deemed inappropriate. To fight this injustice, women began
using #curvee and #bringcurvyback in its wake–and it totally worked
Instagram’s director of public policy Nicky Jackson Colaco told The Washington Post
the tag was being overrun by pornography and that “Instagram removes
several tags every day when analysis from the company’s automated and
human content filtering systems get reports from users that they’ve
become a problem. And at some point last week, #curvy hit the tipping
point.” She added, “This wasn’t curvy pornography, this was just
irrelevant pornography.”
After hearing the internet’s plea to bring the hashtag back, the
company listened. Colaco “understands how important the term is to the
people who use to express a positive body image. So as Instagram moves
to restore the hashtag, it’s also taken the time to find new tools to
help it better parse through the photos that its 300 million users post
to the site every day.” Well done, ladies. Well. Done.
